“I maintain that the only purpose of science is to ease the hardship of human existence.”

— Bertolt Brecht, Life of Galileo

My academic journey has been blessed with pivotal encounters with great educators since my boyhood. I see giving back to the next generation as one of my lifelong missions as a scientist.

Outreach

For High School Students

Nada Math and Physics Camp (灘校理数合宿)

Nada Math and Physics Camp

Chief Coordinator, 2022, 2023, 2025, 2026

Nada High School, my alma mater, has an exceptionally strong, internationally distinguished culture of mathematics and science, but relatively few opportunities to connect that culture with the front lines of academic research. I founded an intensive mathematics and physics program in collaboration with my former teacher, university faculty, and alumni, including visits to the University of Tokyo and RIKEN. I have also organized annual hands-on workshops on advanced topics in mathematical physics such as Penrose tiling and quasicrystals.

HAGI Trailblazer Program for Academic Navigation (はぎたん)

Mentor, 2024

Hagi City, my birthplace, has no nearby university offering a broad range of STEM programs. joined the city’s academic exploration program for high school students as a mentor. Through lectures and individual mentoring, I introduced students to the scientific method and academic pathways beyond their local environment.

For the General Public

Earth and Planetary Physics at the UTokyo May Festival (五月祭)

Nada Math and Physics Camp

Coordinator, 2025

I led efforts to expand and enhance the Earth and Planetary Physics exhibits at the University of Tokyo’s May Festival. I also coordinated the production of the department’s first peer-reviewed student magazine, spanning more than 200 pages (!), and hosted a public dialogue with novelist Shin Iyohara, a former Ph.D. student in the department.

International Physics Olympiad 2023

Staff, 2023

I served as staff at the International Physics Olympiad 2023 in Tokyo, supporting the Russian and Kyrgyz teams during the competition. Although I never made it to the IPhO as a high school student, Japan’s national Physics Olympiad introduced me to kindred spirits and opened the door to the rich and expansive world of physics.

Community Engagement

Nada Students Abroad Association (灘校海外学生会)

Community Coordinator · 2026–Present

Together with several fellow alumni, I co-founded a network for Nada alumni pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees abroad, which also includes current students and recent alumni considering overseas paths. Our goal is to make overseas academic paths more visible and accessible to current students and recent alumni, while exploring the global potential of the Nada community.

Yūgen Club (湧源クラブ)

Event Coordinator · 2023–2025

I organized events for the Yūgen Club founded by mathematician Heisuke Hironaka (広中平祐), a long-standing community for people with a shared passion for mathematics and science over 40 years.

Nada Alumni Association (灘校同窓会)

Committee Member · 2022–Present

I serve on the Class of ’22 organizing committee of the Nada Alumni Association and also participate in activities of its Tokyo Branch as an advisor on alumni engagement with current students.
